The Big Thrill – Tarte limited edition color collection review

on October 27, 2012

(left to right: row 1 – shooting star, giant peach, totally taupe, brilliant bronze | row 2 – cloud 9, pop of pink, amazed by amethyst, pumped about purple | row 3 – silver burst, next level lilac, intergallactic metallic, jump for juniper | row 4 – clay crush, rush of gold, go for the green, exquisite emerald)

So a couple of weekends ago, I had to return some items to Ulta…I bought two of the Essie Breast Cancer Awareness nail polish collection but completely forgot that I had already ordered the same two colors elsewhere.  But of course, as with any trip to exchange something, it becomes an exercise in futility…the resolve is strong but the flesh is weak.  I had fully intended on returning the two nail polishes and making an about face without looking around.  I was almost out the door when out of the corner of my eyes, I noticed a beautiful display of limited collection items from Tarte.  My mind kept saying, keep walking girl….you don’t need more make up but my feet weren’t having any of it.  So I gave in and sauntered to the Tarte display.  They had so many lovely boxed collections but the one that drew my attention is the “The Big Thrill”…a complete make-up collection with:

  • 16 Full Size Amazonian clay eye shadows
  • 1 Amazonian clay bronzer in Park Ave Princess
  • 3 Amazonian clay 12-hour blushes in:  Angelic, Curious and Thrilled
  • 3 Full Size vitamin lip glosses in:  Apple-a-Day, Abra-cad-Apricot and Strawberry Sensation

It’s $48 but with all the stuff you get, the retail value is $435….one blush alone cost $25 retail.  Ok…so I don’t need more make up but what really sealed the deal were the words on the box that read “Formulated without parabens, mineral oil, phthlates, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), and synthetic fragrance”….BINGO!  YAHTZE! UNO!   Any make up without these evil ingredients I’m willing to try (I’m trying to use natural products because of my dermatitis as seen in this post).  The only Tarte products I’ve tried before are their Clean Slate eye primer, the Glisten blush (love it) and the clay eyeliner.  All were great but I actually tried them not knowing they were free of the pesky ingredients I listed above.

The presentation is lovely…you get three tiers along with a mirror under the lid and a cue card with tips on how to create different looks – top tier holds the full size eye shadows, 2nd tier holds the bronzer and blushes and 3rd tier holds the glosses.  The eye shadow colors are fabulous, mix of satin, matte and shimmery colors.  They glide on really well and with my crepey skin in some areas of my eyes, I was concerned with the shimmery shadows but they were fine…no crepey lines at all.  I love the mix of earthy neurtal tones with the jewel tones especially with the holidays fast approaching.  I’m really loving using teals and greens as eyeliners so these were perfect.  I confess…I haven’t tried the bronzer yet…it looks really dark so I’m hesitant but rest assured, I’ll be rocking it soon as the weather turns even colder and my skin gets sallower, I’m gonna need all the help I can get.  What I’m really excited about is the Angelic blush – many YouTubers who have also picked up the Tarte blush limited edition boxed collection from Sephora, have raved about the Angelic shade as a highlighter…I tried it as such and they’re right….beautfiul, especially for an evening out.  Thrilled is a shimmery light mauvy/pink shade while Curious is a matte peachy shade…both are so pretty.  Now the glosses…I’ve been shying away from glosses lately as my lips have been very sensitive to non-natural lip products.  All I’ve been using is the EOS lip balms…love them!  But these glosses….oh my fabulous God…gorgeous! Not sticky, emollient, taste/smell yummy and the colors are so girly pretty.  My favorite is Apple-A-Day…it’s the most gorgeous pink, your lips look so healthy and moist without looking like an oil slick.  Abra-cad-apricot is creamy and subtle, perfect for everyday look.  Strawberry Sensation is also creamy and very lady-like.  All three are full size so I’ll be trying each out everyday to see how they affect my sensitive lips.

Bottomline, this is a great buy especially if you want to try out the line.  The bonus of the line being free of harmful ingredients and also “cruelty-free” (not tested on animals)…beyond awesome!  You can grab this + other Tarte limited edition boxed collections at Ulta and Sephora.  Check your mailer Ulta coupons before you leave or those $5 off inserts in Allure magazines to get an even better deal.  Ulta also has a $3.50 off $10 or more coupon in store and online that you can print here or $10 off $60 using coupon code 89776.

I know with the holidays around the corner, there will be many more limited collections coming out soon and now that I’ve tried a few items from the Tarte product line, I’ll probably be more like to try their other collections as well….that is, if my feet win out over my mind again…most likely.

What do you think of these boxed sets?  Worth it or holiday gimmick?

  1. […] This year, Sephora did not extend the Friends and Family sale to their customers; it was exclusive to only their employees.  Some of the YouTube beauty gurus I follow were none too thrilled about it and neither was I.  Then lo and behold, I received the VIB Beauty Insider Holiday Shopping Event invitation/coupon in the mail this week.  Today, Thursday 11/8/12 – you get 20% off your purchase + a free exclusive limited edition tote bag.  Also from 11/8 thru 11/12,  you get 20% off your purchase in store and online using the code CELEBRATE.  I’m so glad I waited to go back and get some more of the Tarte and Korres products I’ve been eyeing.  Both lines are free of the harmful ingredients that I’m trying to avoid (see here and here).
