For those who don’t have any kids, a Tween is anyone beTWEEN the ages of 9 and 12. I have two girls, 11 and 8…the Tween years is a delicate time as I’ve come to find out of my Boo. It’s almost like prep time for the teen years when all the angst and drama are more pronounced. My Boo started middle school this year with some apprenhension combined with excitement. It’s that time when they want to act and look a little bit older than they truly are but also lingers in the kid-like behavior they’re already comfortable in. It can be stressful and confusing. There were tears and sobbing on the first day of school…she didn’t cry though 😉 But a week after school started, she was doing fine and really enjoying life in middle school.
Now about the Tween box…early in the summer break, she started peppering me with questions that I was hoping to put off but knew had to be answered. She is 11 (aaahhhh!) and is already going through certain changes. I let her lead the conversations with her questions and I answered as truthfully and plainly as I could. I didn’t use euphimisms or sugar coat much. I’m not going to list everything we talked about and it didn’t all take place in one discussion. Over the course of the summer, we talked about many things; I think it helped ease her anxiety about middle school.
Then right before school started, I put together a “Tween” box (some people call it the puberty box…not digging that name) and I gave it to her the morning of her first day at school. As you can see from the pic, it’s a girly keepsake box that I got from Home Goods and I filled it with things that I thought would help her transition into middle school and the physical changes she’s going through. I know that I would’ve loved to receive a similar box from my mother but that was a different time I guess. Anyway, for anyone with young daughters, this is a great way to ease them into their Tween years…my daughter loved it! Here are the items I put inside the Tween box:
- American Girl Books (The Feelings Book, The Care and Keeping of You)
- Training Bra
- Deodorant
- Pantiliners
- Diary/Journal
- Burt’s Bees Gud Shower Gel and Lotion
- Loofah
- Shower Cap
- Stickers
- Picture frames (she got a new camera over Christmas)
- Burt Bee’s Lip Gloss
Do you have any Tweens? What do you think of the Tween box?
