Ahhh…Fall! My favorite time of the year. And although it’s bitter sweet to say goodbye to Summer, where I live, there are many reasons to love Fall: the changing of the leaves (note to self: visit Aspen and Pike’s Peak this year!), beautiful sunsets as the days get shorter, warm cups of yummy goodness, and best of all, the transitional fashion we get to wear going into the cooler months.
So I thought I’d share my favorite Fall classics that you may also enjoy adding to your wardrobe. By “classics”, I mean those perennial items that can stand the test of trends and give you many years of wearable enjoyment. Of course, if you have a completely different fashion style or aesthetic, not all of these may work for your wardrobe. My style is classic girly with sprinkles of preppyness. My sister would argue that I am all preppy but I disagree…I actually just love girly pretty outfits without an abundance of cuteness, after all, I’m not a Spring chick anymore.
I hope this list inspires you to find something that can be fun staple additions to your closet. On their own, you can mix and match them to come up with many different outfits; added to your other staples and trendy items, they can expand your wardrobe nicely. 1 – Leopard flats which is really a neutral (thanks Jenna Lyons!) – leopard print is a true perennial favorite of mine, year after year, as evidenced in prior years’ posts here and here. Try a more affordable option here and here
2 – Ankle booties in a neutral shade – a no-brainer, a pair like these will get tons of wear. Other options: here and here.
3 – Chunky cable knit sweater – great for layering or on its own with jeans and boots. Other options: here and here
4 – Borrowed from the boys a long long time ago, perfected by the girls, the chambray or denim button shirt, no words necessary. Other options: here and here
5 – A lightweight field or parka-style jacket; you’ll grab this on your way out to do anything come Fall and even mild Winter days. Other option: here, here and here
6 – Quilted vest; I’ve worn vests since I was a teenager but I absolutely love the newer versions especially those by J.Crew. Other brands like the sister trio Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic also have nice options: here (petites available), and here
7 – Dark/Black skinny jeans – a nice stretchy pair that cinches in all the right places will be in constant rotation in your wardrobe. Other options: here and here
8 – I am a self-confessed scarf addict; as a kid, I fought my parents’ urgings to put on a scarf before running out the door (crazy ignorant child!) and now…I can’t get enough of them. Scarves are the quintessential “form meets function” item; it can add that extra something to your outfit, keep you warm, and they’re pretty! The one pictured below is an affordable option that I absolutely love from Old Navy. Choose a lightweight option with prints or colors taken from the beautiful rich hues of Fall. 9 – Finally, a good pair of tall boots in cognac or black; I scored this pair from this year’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. This is my first pair of Frye boots and I love them. The cognac color was on my list so when I saw this Melissa Tab boots at the sale, I had to snap it up. Other options: here and here
