October usually signals the fast pace of the last months of the year and the start of the holiday season. So before the frenzy begins, I’m taking a moment to share what I enjoyed in the month before. The best thing I discovered last month is the Outlander series on Starz channel. It actually premiered in August but I really enjoyed the last few episodes in September. And now it’s on a mid season break and won’t be back til April…sigh. I may have to pick up the books to get thru the withdrawals. I’m a huge fan of period movies and sci-fi genre…this show is perfect for me. Just to give a brief synopsis of the show…it’s told from the lead female, Claire Beacham’s point of view. Set right after WWII, Claire and her husband (both English) go on a postponed honeymoon to Scotland where he researches his ancestry. Claire somehow ends up traveling back in time to the early 18th century where anyone who is not from there is known as an Outlander. The story unfolds as Claire has to traverse the Scottish highlands, meeting up with a clan and a very nasty English officer who is her husband’s relative. The Scottish backdrop is beautiful, the actors are fantastic, and the story is very entertaining….kinda like Braveheart with a twist. The best part of this show is the lead character; such a strong, smart and unyielding woman who is torn between going “home” and the bond she has formed with her host clan and the kilted men aren’t bad to look at either, especially Jamie, Claire’s 18th century love interest. Not sure when it’ll be available beyond the Starz channel but if this is your kind of story, I highly suggest checking it out–see the series trailer here.
